Sleepless in Toronto

How are you sleeping these days? I don’t know about you, but I haven’t had a solid night’s sleep in over two years. Granted, I have struggled with sleep for more than ten years now. What feels like a million years ago now, there was a time when I was travelling to six or seven countries a year. The time zone changes wreaked havoc on my personal sleep cycle. There were days when I didn’t know if I was coming or going! I would often wake up in the middle of the night with no idea of where in the world I was. It was usually in some hotel in either Hong Kong or Malaysia. I was always thinking about where my next flight was going to be.

These days, there is only one country on my mind: Liberia.

If you know me at all or have followed me for any length of time, you will remember the days when I would be going off to Israel three or four times a year. Sometimes I was there on a research trip. Other times I would be filming for television or leading another tour. To date, I have been there an incredible 45 times.

However, if you follow my social media now, more times than not, the post will be about what I am doing in Liberia, or what I want to do next in Liberia, or that I’m going back to Liberia. And when there is a perfect storm, it’s a combination of all of the above.

Oh yeah, I started this blog by talking about sleep, or the lack thereof.

It occurred to me that my difficulty in sleeping these past two years, happened to coincide with my new-found call of ministry to Liberia. It started to make sense. The truth is…Liberia is all I can think about these days. Ask my wife, my kids or my friends. Go back and look at my posts on Facebook or Instagram for the past two years, and you will find that the majority of them deal with Liberia in form or another.

I will gladly keep trading sleep (or lack thereof) for continued passion, vision and favour for Liberia in the forthcoming days.
